How To Make Your Water Safer When You Travel Or Eat Out

May 26, 2008 · 2 Comments

“More than 1 in 5 Americans unknowingly drink tap water polluted with feces, radiation or other contaminants.  Nearly 1,000 deaths each year and at least 400,000 cases of waterborne illness may be attributed to contaminated water”.

           -          The New York Times  -  June 2, 1995

Coming from the UK, I can tell you that it’s not much better over here either.  More and more people are becoming aware of the problems with our tap water.  Furthermore, our tap water is usually acidic, whilst our bodies should be alkaline.

Most people who keep fish know to check the PH level (measurement or acidity or alkalinity) regularly to make sure that the water remains alkaline.  I know of people in the city of Bath near to me, where they changed the water in the fish tank and their fish died.  This happened independently in a couple houses down the same street within days of each other.

Yet this same water is considered by our water authorities as fit for human consumption!

More and more people these days are becoming aware of this problem which is why the trade in water filters has grown enormously.  Practically every pharmacy and supermarket sells water filters now (I can’t remember them being sold when I was a child . . . a few years ago . . . . ahem!).

But what can you do if you travel a lot or eat out.  Its not practical carrying your own water filter around, not to mention the strange looks you would get.  Well the Japanese have come up with a very clever solution.

Firstly though, in 1980 the Guinness Book of Records sent a man from the United Kingdom to interview the oldest man alive at that time, being 115 years of age and living on an island just of the coast of Okinawa.  The Englishman noted that there were a lot of elderly people over the age of 100 on that island, who were quite active with no arthritis or degenerative diseases.  Back in England many people are struggling by the age 80.

The Japanese did a study to determine why people from these islands lived much longer than the other Japanese people.  The diet and lifestyle were pretty much the same.  However, they found that the water was different.  The islands were made of coral and as the rain fell it percolates through the coral sands and into the water supply.  The coral oxygenated, alkalised and mineralised the water that these people drank each day.

The Japanese began to mine the coral and use it in water filters.  Although this was successful, they soon realised that when they travelled or ate out, they could not use these filters.  Being inventive people, they started to put the coral into small bags similar to teabags.

If you follow this link and watch this video you will see live demonstrations, showing that these coral teabags can neutralise chlorine in water, increase the oxygen in your blood stream and change an acid PH reading into an alkaline reading.  What the video does not show however, is that the coral also contains calcium, magnesium and over 70 trace minerals which become ionic in water making them more readily absorbed by the body.  The health benefits of the coral are that it can:

-          Help assimilate vitamins and minerals from food and other supplements

-          Cleanse the intestine, liver and kidneys.

-          Help to protect you from free radicals.

-          Improve joint and muscle mobility.

-          Raise the body’s oxygen level.

-          Assist with digestive problems.

-          Regulate blood/sugar levels.

-          Assist in maintaining correct blood pressure.

-          Help against cancer.

-          Neutralise acids in the body that can lead to illness.

-          Help against heart disease and arthritis.

So please watch the video to see the actual demonstrations

I should warn you however, that part of the video needs clarifying.  At the end of the video it says that you can only get the product by joining their multi level marketing affiliate program called The Berry Tree (or get it from somebody in that program).  This is misleading.  The coral in the video has had natural ingredients added to give it a berry flavour and it is only the berry-flavoured coral that is available through the Berry Tree affiliate program.  However, you can get the exact same coral calcium without the flavouring by going to the Nutronix website, clicking on “Products” (near top, center), then clicking on “alkalizing and detox” near the top of the list of links on the left.  It is called “O2 Performance Hydration”.

Should you be tempted to join the Berry Tree affiliate program then I will be honest, it does not live up to its hype.   I recommend that you simply get it direct from Nutronix.

10 Top Tips To Help The Environment (And Save Money At The Same Time)

May 24, 2008 · 4 Comments

Global warming is the biggest threat to mankind since the Cold War, when the super powers thought what a good idea it was to stockpile enough nukes to destroy the world several times over (as if destroying once wasn’t enough).  Therefore we all need to find ways to save energy wherever we can.  It may seem that on our own we can do very little against what is happening on a global scale, but every little bit helps.

It reminds me of the story of a man who found hundreds of jelly fish stranded on the beach after the tide had gone out.  He started to pick the jelly fish up one by one and place them back in the water.  Another man who was passing by told the first man that he was wasting his time as there were simply too many jelly fish trapped on the beach for the first man to make a real difference.  As the first man continued to return jelly fish back into the water he replied, “made a difference to that one . . . . made a difference to that one . . . . made a difference to that one”.

However small our contribution may be, we can all do a little bit to help to lessen our negative impact on the environment.  As a bonus for helping the environment, using less fuel will also save you your money too.  So here are some easy tips to help you protect the environment and keep more of your money where it belongs . . . . . in your pocket:

1.             Switch of lights that you are not using in other parts of the house.  Get yourself energy saving light bulbs as well.  They cost more to buy, but you save in the long term (plus they last longer so you buy less bulbs).

2.            Put the plug in the sink when washing your hands or dishes so that you do not waste so much of the water you have just heated.

3.            Turn your thermostat down a few degrees on your hot water boiler.  Many people have their water too hot to handle directly and need to mix in cold anyway.  Just turning down a couple of degrees will hardly be noticed, but burn less energy.

4.              Take a shower instead of a bath as showers use less hot water.  Unless of course unless you are sharing your bath with a partner (preferably your own).

 5.             Don’t leave electrical appliances of standby as this still burns electricity which all adds up over time.

6.              Don’t over fill the kettle.  Heating extra water that you don’t need is a waste.

7.              One of the best savings is made by good use of wall and loft insulation.  It may be a bit expensive to install in the first place, but once it is done it can last indefinitely, keeping heat in a saving fuel.

8.                  Your hot water tank should be insulated too.  This saves heat loss, so you are not constantly using energy to re-heat the water.

9.                 When cooking, match the size of pots to the size of the hob.  Using a pot that is too small just lets the flame go up the side which is wasted (unless you want your kitchen heated up).

10.               Using a pressure cooker reduces cooking time therefore less energy is needed to complete the cooking.

All the above are quite simple really and many of them will seem obvious, but how often do we forget, or not bother simply because it is more convenient not to bother?  I know I do sometimes.

If you wish to take it a bit further, then some energy companies have green policies too, trying to use as much renewable energy as possible.  This list is far from exhaustive, so please add your own ideas below.

Facts And Myths About Colloidal Silver

May 20, 2008 · 11 Comments

Colloidal silver solution has become quite controversial over the last few years with many claiming it to be some kind of immune support superhero, whilst other claim that it simply turns you blue (a condition called argyria). Furthermore, those in the “superhero” camp sometimes argue over which is best, ionic silver or colloidal silver and many claims are made by various manufacturers which in all fairness cannot always be substantiated with any evidence at all.

I referred to Keith Moeller, Vice President of American Biotech Labs, in my earlier posting on colloidal silver and malaria. Keith is a World leading expert on colloidal silver and is certainly vocal on the subject.

In a public presentation Keith Moeller boldly tells his audience, “We are now on a topic that I absolutely love. I eat, breath and sleep this stuff every day. There is nobody on the planet that knows more about this subject than I do”. As his company has recently applied for the first patent in colloidal silver technology since 1924, has received Environment Protection Agency approval, had it product tested by the best scientific research establishments in the world and has been invited to present to the US Congress; his bold claim is probably very justified.

Keith says that there are thousands of colloidal silver solution manufactures and is scathing of those who promote their products using misleading information. He reports that many manufacturers will, “say silver can do this, silver can do that. They will never say MY silver product can do this. The reason why is because they have no data on it. They don’t know that their product will do something”.

For those who argue about ionic silver solution versus colloid silver solution, Keith says, “they’ll say everything has to do with particle size. It’s not true. Second thing they say is they have a big war of ionic verse colloidal . . . . what we’re going to do today is we’re going to raise you above that entire level. The new silver solution is exactly that. It is a NEW silver solution. It is an engineered silver nano particle that can do things that no other silver solution that you have seen or heard of can do”.

Referring to safety studies by NAMSA (Toxicity Tests), Brigham Young University (Probiotic Bacteria Study) and Viridis BioPharma (Probiotic Bacteria Study) Keith emphasis that, “We have done a great deal of work . . . . . the first one we tested at 200 times the normal adult dosage. That is equivalent to me sitting down and taking 32 ounces at one sitting. At that level it was deemed completely non toxic to the test animals”. He continues that the other studies have proven that this new advanced silver solution is harmless to probiotic bacteria (the ”friendly” bacteria that we need to assist with digestion) and there is no risk of argyria.

Having made it clear that there have been 8 major safety studies on the product which has culminated in EPA approvals, Keith then addressed the issue of why take it.

“Nobody” he says “has ever proved that using a silver product internally can do anything at all, you’ll see that argument everywhere”. He then quotes from a 124 person study taken from 4 African hospitals where his company’s new advanced colloidal silver solution was used against a whole range of complaints. Details of the study and complaints sucessfully dealt with are available on the patent.

“We use the top lab in every area”, says Keith as quotes trial after trial from many universities and government test houses.

“Nobody can argue with our numbers because 1) they’re all independent and 2) we go to the top sources”. This is why Keith is insistent throughout his powerful presentation (which really should be seen) that especially with the growing resistance to antibiotics, every household should have a bottle of the new advanced silver solution as a first line of defence.

New German TKTL1 Anti-Cancer Diet Targets The Most Resistant Cancer Cells

May 12, 2008 · 8 Comments

Some cancer cells have mutated so as to become super resistant to radiation and chemotherapy.  They also have a greater resistance to oxygen used in a number of alternative approaches.  As radiation and chemotherapy continues it is common that tumours become more and more resistant and the treatments become less and less effective.

Breakthrough German research headed by Dr Johannes Coy has isolated the mechanism by which some cancer cells develop this resistance.  This means that not only can the mechanism of resistance be understood, but weaknesses of these cells can also be identified.

Sadly, an internet search for Dr Coy will reveal that his research is not well known in the English speaking world.  I believe that it is necessary to rectify this.

Cancer cells (like normal cells), require energy.  Normal cells and some cancer cells “burn” glucose (a simple form of sugar) in a part of the cell called the mitochondria (the cells power plant).  Back in 1924, another German scientist, Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. Otto Warburg discovered that some cancer cells adapt and deactivate the mitochondria.  These adapted cancer cells “ferment” rather than “burn” glucose.  Fermentation of glucose gives the cancer cells the following advantages over cancer cells that burn glucose:

·         The fermentation of glucose produces lactic acid (known as lactate), which destroys the surrounding tissue.  This allows the cancerous tumour to easily grow (metastasise) into the surrounding area.
Note: The lactic acid also causes pain.

·         Deactivating the mitochondria causes these cancer cells to become resistant to a large range of chemotherapies.

·         Without “burning” the glucose, much less oxygen is required; therefore these cells can survive in areas of inadequate oxygen supply (hypoxia).

·         In areas of low oxygen (hypoxic region) these cells become more resistant to radiation.

·         Lactic acid also forms a coating around the cancer cell which protects it from the bodies defence cells.

Cancer cell absorbs blood sugar

Cancer cell produces lactic acid

Lactic acid protects cancer cells

Defence cells cannot attack

Cancer cells multiply without resistance

As chemotherapy and radiation therapy proceed, the glucose burning cancer cells are killed off comparatively easily, giving a relatively good early result.  However, the more resistant glucose fermenting cells are left behind which is why it is believed that these therapies may become less effective over time.

Although Warburg discovered this glucose fermenting process many years ago, he could not explain why it happened.  Dr Coy’s research however has identified a specific enzyme which is responsible for allowing this fermentation process to occur.  This is the TKTL1 (transketolase-like 1) enzyme.  It is the TKTL1 enzyme which allows the fermentation of glucose without the use of the mitochondria, when there is insufficient oxygen for the usual burning process.

However, having discovered this process, Dr Coy was also able to identify the weakness of these super resistant TKTL1 positive cancer cells:

  • These cells are dependant on glucose for their energy.  Other sugars such as fructose cannot be used directly for producing energy.
  • Fat burning is also interrupted in these cells, therefore oils and fats cannot be used for producing energy either.
  • The fermentation process with the TKTL1 enzyme requires about 20 to 30 times as much glucose as do glucose burning cells.

To sum up, these super resistant cancer cells are entirely dependant on glucose and need a lot of it.  That is their absolute weakness which is exploited by Dr Coy’s TKTL1 diet.  The diet provides the body’s healthy cells with energy whilst starving the TKTL1 positive cancer cells of glucose.

Firstly, practically all sugars and carbohydrates must be removed from the diet (a portion of carbohydrate turns to sugar after consumption).  It is however quite difficult to eat without any carbohydrates.  Imagine no rice, pasta, bread or potatoes.  In addition, the restriction on glucose means hardly any fruit can be consumed and even ordinary milk is banned (due to lactose: milk sugar).

Dr Coy has therefore developed a range of special products to help overcome this problem and keep the diet a little bit more normal.  This includes special bread, pasta and a lactose drink, all of which contain almost no carbohydrate or glucose.

The Coy diet products are basically in 3 categories:

1.                   Special oils which inhibit the TKTL1 positive cancer cells ability to produce lactic acid.

2.                   Lactate drink which removes the lactic acid from around the cancer cells.

3.                   Special proteins which work synergistically with the low carbohydrate products and oils to feed the healthy cells within the body.

Coy nutrients arrive at cancer cells

Coy oils block TKTL1 enzyme (no more fermentation)

Coy lactate drink breaks down lactic acid

The body’s defence cells can attack again

Multiplication of cancer cells can be inhibited

German cuisine does not normally cause much excitement, but for those in the know this German diet is certainly causing some.  For those of you who are educated in dietary requirements, there may be some concern at the idea of drastically cutting carbohydrates and glucose.  I therefore feel that a bit further explanation is required.

The blood sugar level is maintained within safe limits by the body.  When the blood sugar level is too high, the hormone insulin is released by the pancreas, which puts the excess glucose into storage within the cells.  When blood sugar level is low, the hormone glucagone releases the glucose from this storage.  However, even when all the glucose has been released from all the cells (which will happen with the Coy diet), the body is able to make glucose from amino acids, which are a components of protein (you will note that protein is an important constituent of the Coy Diet).

This means that if you consume enough protein, you can go without any glucose or carbohydrate and your blood sugar level will remain within safe limits.  The human body is well adapted to this.  Today, most of us in the developed countries are used to a vast variety of available foods from which to meet our needs.  This is however, a fairly recent achievement in the history of mankind.  Furthermore, many people today in the poorer countries do not have the full range of foods that we in the developed countries take for granted, but they still live on.  This is because our bodies are designed to adapt to many situations including shortages and starvation, so the principles of this diet are quite safe.

When the amount of glucose and glucose releasing carbohydrates consumed falls below a certain level, most cells will naturally change over to another source of energy.  The body’s fat reserves are rich in energy and start to decompose in the absence of glucose.  The decomposition products from the fat, namely ketone bodies, will then become the main source of energy for other healthy cells.  As the TKTL1 positive cancer cells are only able to use glucose for energy and not ketone bodies, they effectively starve.  Incidentally, the heart always uses ketone bodies rather than glucose for its energy, even when glucose is readily available.  That is why you hardly ever hear about cancer of the heart.

The Coy products are available from Tavarlin and they can be contacted at info@tavarlin.de.  Although this is a German company and their website is in German, they do have English speaking staff and English brochures.  Presently they only directly supply customers in Germany.  However, if the word is spread about this diet and demand throughout the world is sufficient, then maybe this can be changed for the good of us all.

In-Car Air Filters

May 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Environmental awareness is growing as is chemical sensitivity. Many people are looking for safer cleaning product, less additives in food, water filters and so on. One of the worst environments that we find ourselves in on a daily basis (which is often overlooked), is in fact our own cars.

The engine creates a continuous sequence of controlled explosions just a few feet away from us. Old or badly maintained engines can leak oil, fuel or exhaust fumes which are sucked into the cars ventilation system; whilst just a few more feet behind you the exhaust from the sequence of controlled explosions is pumped out. Then you have everybody else’s fumes to contend with too.

Did you know that you can actually fit an air filter into your car that removes particles, odors, particulates and volatile organic compounds? Until recently I was not aware of them.  However, my brother and his wife use one, so to find out more read Nat’s article on “How To Reduce Our Pollution Intake On Car Journeys“.

Environmental Law: Getting It Right

May 4, 2008 · 2 Comments

All military explosives (bombs, shells, etc) have a service life for which they are considered safe and suitable for service, known in the UK as S3: (S cubed). After that service life the explosive filling may decay and become unstable. As such, they need to be safely disposed of.

At one time it was common practice for the British Royal Navy to dump out of date explosives in the Atlantic Ocean. On the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, there is a large deep trench; where dumping occurred. The bottom of this trench is so deep that hardly anything is able to live down there. Furthermore, when the explosives finally reached the floor of this trench, they would quickly sink into the thick layers of soft silt and be buried.

Environmentalists fought to have this practice of dumping at sea stopped as it pollutes the oceans. Over time it was reasoned that dangerous chemicals will be released and could be carried anywhere by the currents. A law was passed in the UK and now the Royal Navy is not allowed to dump at sea, except for operational purposes (for example: a damaged torpedo on board that could be a danger to the ship or crew).

The only catch is that these explosives still need to be disposed of. So just how does the UK disposed of them?

Unfortunately the most efficient way left is to burn them off. This means that instead of dumping deep in the ocean where next to nothing lives, they are burned of into the air we breath and where it can contribute to damaging the ozone layer and global warming.

In principle, I agree with protecting the Oceans and dumping there is not a good thing; but I think that the more immediate threat is our own air that we breath and global warming. Before passing such laws (however well intentioned), we should look at what alternatives are available to us.
