Approvals For Herbal And Nutritional Supplements As Medicines (Part 3)

August 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This posting will make more sense if you read Part 1 as well.

Having read a very good posting on Dr Buttar’s blog, I was inspired to write an additional posting on this subject.  As Dr Buttar points out, many mainstream doctors readily issue pharmaceutical drugs to treat a symptom, when the route cause can often be eliminated by dietary or lifestyle adjustments.

So why will doctors seldom issue nutritional/lifestyle advice, whilst (as Dr Buttar points out) readily issuing drugs that often have toxic side effects?

I would say that there are 2 reasons:

  • The first reason being that it is the way that they are trained.  Very little time of a doctors training is devoted to nutrition.  Many people who advocate natural health may remember a popular tape some years ago called “Dead Doctor’s Don’t Lie”, where the narrator pointed out that the average life expectancy of a doctor is not actually that good.  He suggested that if you wanted advice on longevity, then ask a bus conductor as statistically they live longer.
  • We live in a “don’t sue me” culture.  A doctor can issue all the drugs he likes as long as they have been “approved” for that condition without being sued.  As long as he gets the quantity right he is covered.  But if he issued nutritional/lifestyle advice for certain conditions and things went wrong, he could be sued.

I suspect that the “don’t sue me” culture is the reason that very little training is giving to nutrition as it is safer for them not to go there.  This is why in the Part 1 of these postings, I advocate that herbal/nutritional methods should be tested to the same degree as pharmaceutical drugs, so that doctors can issue them without fear of recrimination.  The only trouble with that is, who would fund testing of things likes herbs, which cannot be patented (therefore no big profits derived from the enormous expense of testing)?  I have made suggestions to answer that question in Part 1.

Approvals For Herbal And Nutritional Supplements As Medicines (Part 2)

August 15, 2008 · 6 Comments

As per my original posting on this subject, there are many cheap herbs and other nutritional supplements that can cure many ailments.  However, there are legal restrictions on making any claims to this effect.  This is because a great deal of very expensive trials are required to approve any substance as a cure for any given condition.  Nobody is prepared to pay to test herbs as they cannot be patented (therefore no one could recoup the enormous amount of money spent on the testing).

I mentioned in an earlier posting, how I had read an article on research into using turmeric to treat cancer.  The article stated that there was hope that they could make a drug from it soon.  Why not just use the turmeric?  Because you can’t patent it.

No patent = No significant profit.

I know from my own personal experience that colloidal silver works, but I’m not allowed to say that it will cure any specific conditions.

At one time in history, herbal remedies were all we had and would be administered by the wise old lady of the village.  Well if it didn’t work, the wise old lady would soon be re-named the stupid old hag.  Nobody had heard of the placebo effect back then and it had a very long history of working.

So why did this method of healing all but die out.  Well I suspect that many wise old ladies got burnt as witches, as they had knowledge of “strange” things.  Many people would call it “woo” nowadays.    Villages became towns and towns became cities and old ways got replaced by more modern medicines, some of which are more effective, but many of which have side effects.  There is place for both in today’s world, especially in the poor nations where disease is rife and they have trouble affording modern medicines.

Even if the herbal medicines are less effective, if it means that the price will allow a poor country to treat many more of their countrymen than they could otherwise do, then it is worth pursuing.  Please see my first posting on this subject for a suggestion on how this might feasibly be achieved.

Approvals For Herbal And Nutritional Supplements As Medicines

August 8, 2008 · 5 Comments

Back in the days of sailing ships, when a crew would sometimes only have non-perishable foods on board for extended periods, one of the most feared diseases was scurvy, a condition caused by lack of vitamin C.  In 1747 a Scottish naval surgeon, James Lind, treated a crew with scurvy using oranges and lemons, which lead to dramatic cures.

In 1795, the British Navy started to issue lime juice on a regular basis and all but eradicated scurvy.  This is where the nickname of “Limey” comes from for us Brits.

So what Charlie?

I’m glad you asked me that.  Imagine if that were to happen today.  Before a lime could be acknowledged as a medicine or cure for scurvy, it would have to be exhaustively tested and formally accepted as a medicine by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) or equivalent bodies in other countries.  As limes can not be patented this would never happen.  A pharmaceutical company would take vitamin C and attach it to some other chemical molecule so that they could patent it.  The molecule would probably have to be synthetic, or like the lime it could not be patented.  So today, we would end up with a synthetic drug as an approved medicine for scurvy rather than using a simple lime.

But who would pay the enormous cost for the testing of a lime Charlie?

I’m glad you asked me that.  The first question that should be asked however, is “who can patent a lime”.  Or to put it another way, “who can make a profit from testing the lime”?  Obviously nobody can patent a lime, therefore nobody would be able to profit from proving that limes can cure scurvy.  Therefore nobody would be prepared to pay the enormous bill for the testing.  It has nothing to do with what is best for our health.

This is the problem faced all over the world by millions of herbalists, homeopaths and people in the nutritional supplement business.  I promote an advanced colloidal silverfor its proven anti bacterial/antiviral properties, but I know that many millions of people will not accept it despite loads of evidence as it is not FDA approved (yet).  There is no end of companies that have brilliant products that can cure diseases, but they are not legally allowed to make such claims because they are not proven to the satisfaction of the FDA (or other countries equivalent bodies).

Now don’t get me wrong, as I do not want to be misquoted here.  I DO SUPPORT THE PRINCIPLE OF HAVING AN APPROVING BODY (SUCH AS THE FDA) TO APPROVE HEALTH PRODUCTS, DRUGS AND THE CLAIMS THAT THEY MAKE.  I do know that there are a lot of bad products out there making outrageous claims.

So what part don’t you support Charlie?

I’m glad you asked that.  The part that I do not support, is that the testing is so prohibitively expensive, that only the big pharmaceutical companies are able to pay, and they will only pay if they can patent it and profit from it.  That means that cheap herbal, nutritional and readily available cures (like vitamin C for scurvy) will never obtain approval in today’s world.  Our health professionals would have to prescribe expensive drugs (for the likes of scurvy) rather than sending the patient to the nearest fruit shop, or they risk being struck off.

In fairness to the big pharmaceutical companies, they are businesses; so why should they pay for herbal and nutritional products that they can not patent and profit from.  They would soon be out of business and it is unfair to expect it of them.

So who should pay to test herbal and nutritional products Charlie?

I’m glad you asked me that.  I believe that our governments should pay.  But why should one county’s government pay when all the other countries will benefit too.  The best solution (that I can see) is for all the governments from the developed countries to pay into a pot that the United Nations World Health Organisation (or similar international body) would administer for testing.

Although it would mean an initial outlay from various governments, the costs would be shared.  But just imagine the impact that this could have on the the poor third world countries if they were able to treat their people with cheap herbal, homeopathic or nutritional medicines rather than only being able to use expensive drugs that they can’t afford.

If you think that this is a good idea, then please pass this posting on.  With pharmaceutical companies putting the squeeze on nutritional supplements through the international law making bodies, we need to push back.  I am a full time carer, so unfortunately I am not in a position to start a campaign, but I can put the idea out.  If the idea is spread far enough, then maybe somebody might be able to pick it up and do something with it.

Is Cancer A Fungus?

August 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Italian Oncologist, Dr Tullio Simoncini has written a book called “Cancer Is A Fungus”, where he outlines his studies showing that fungi are at the root of all cancers.  In 2005, cancer overtook heart disease as the number one killer in the USA.  But despite its prevalence and all the wonders of modern science, cancer is still considered by many to be a mystery.  Not so to Dr Simoncini.

In a video interview with Doug Kaufman (available on Dr Mercola’s e-newsletter), Dr Simoncini show some film taken from inside cancer victims bodies.  At the middle of the cancerous tumour it is . . . . white.  Sometimes it appears red, but Dr Simoncini show how with a little bit of washing away of blood it is white.  This says Dr Simoncini is fungi, particularly Candida, which several studies have shown to be present in 79 to 97% of all cancer patients.

Dr Simoncini says that cancer develops in 5 stages:

1     Candida roots itself deep into connective tissue of various organs.
2     The body attempts to protect itself by hyper production of cells to encapsulate the fungus.  This becomes the tumour.
3     Candida spreads to other parts of the body, whilst the body attempts to encapsulate it (metastasis).
4     The body becomes more and more exhausted, which allows the fungi to spread even faster.
5     Death.

So if fungus (particularly Candida) is the problem, what is the answer?  Well according to Dr Simoncini, the easy, quick and cheap way to treat cancer is

. . . . . wait for it

. . . . . sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).

Sodium bicarbonate is a very potent anti fungal agent, which can rapidly raise the alkalinity whilst the fungi needs to stay acidic.  The  sodium bicarbonate is actually injected straight into the center of the tumours and (according to Dr Simoncini) 99% of breast and bladder cancers can be cured in only 6 days (though the body will still have to breakdown the tumour).  It should be noted that just taking the sodium bicarbonate orally is not enough.

A quick search for Dr Simoncini on YouTube.com will find a number of testimonials and presentations.  You can also find out more from Dr Simoncini’ own website or buy his book on Amazon.

Note:  Candida is associated with many health problems today.  Many good supplements that help keep the body alkaline well help.

Can You Trust Chemotherapy

August 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As regular readers will probably have realised, I am wary of chemotherapy and like to explore other methods of treating cancer.  I recently found a very good article on the subject by a Dr Buttar who actually treats and researches cancer in the USA, using holistic methods.  He explains why it is sometimes the chemotherapy that kills rather than the cancer and how it is misrepresented in the media.

His article sumerises how I feel very well and I would like to recommend it to you.

Colloidal Silver: Non Toxic

August 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Further to my last posting on Heavy Metals causing health problems, I thought it might seem contradictory when I regularly advocate the use of the advanced colloidal silver.  I thought therefore that I would clarify a few points.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) produces Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) reports on toxicity of various substances.  The IRIS report for silver in general (not just colloidal silver) states that the “critical effect in humans ingesting silver is argyria, a medically benign but permanent bluish-gray discoloration of the skin”.  It continues that argyria “is not associated with any adverse health effect”.  Whilst it is nice to know that the worst effect of silver is benign, nobody wants to end up looking like an extra for the X-Men.  Fortunately the IRIS report notes that argyria “is now a rare occurance”.  It is rare because a large quantity of silver is required and the silver particles have to be quite large in order to get trapped under the skin.  Most modern colloidal silvers use nano-particles which are too small to be trapped under the skin and pass through the body quite easily.

The same IRIS report also states on the 5th page that numerous tests were completed as to the absorption and retention of ingested silver in a range of test animals which included primates (a catagory to which human beings belong).  Bearing in mind that this report refers to silver in general and not the nano-particles in modern colloidal silvers, the work concluded that between 90% to 99% of the ingested silver was excreted by the second day after consumption and greater than 99% was excreted in less than a week.  So most silver passes through the body quite quickly and was found not to build up in the body.
